NEET vs AIIMS: Choosing the Right Medical Entrance Exam

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET)is a golden opportunity for aspirants seeking admission to medical courses across India. The National Testing Agency (NTA) is responsible for conducting the NEET examination; held every year. The primary goal of the NEET examination is to eliminate multiple state-level and institutional-level medical entrance exams.

   The All India Institute of Medical Science(AIIMS) is a renowned autonomous institute offering admissions to undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses. AIIMS entrance exam specifically for admission to Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery(MBBS). 

    To get admission to top medical Institutions, entrance exams are very important. The topmost exams such as NEET and AIIMS are focused on assessing students’ knowledge for pursuing a career in medicine.

NEET and AIIMS: Eligibility Criteria

The majority of the qualifying requirements for the AIIMS and NEET exams are the same. These are the conditions needed to take the tests.  

The applicant needs to be a citizen of India. Furthermore, candidates for the exam may be Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs).

Applicants must have graduated from an accredited university or board after completing their senior secondary of high school. English, Biology/Biotechnology, Chemistry, Physics, and Physics are core subjects. For general students, the minimum score required in 12th is 60%. For SC/ST/OPH/NRI students score is 50%. The minimum age requirement for the candidate is 17.

NEET and AIIMS: Syllabus 

There is a major overlap in the syllabus between the AIIMS and NEET exams. Both exams are primarily focused on Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, these subjects are considered core subjects of medical courses. However, AIIMS exam also includes General Knowledge and Aptitude as additional sections.

NEET and AIIMS: Exam Pattern

In a dynamically changing academic environment, grasping the NEET 2024 exam pattern and syllabus is crucial for those venturing into this transformative path. The duration of the NEET exam is 3 hours and consists of 180 questions. It is divided into three sections including Biology, Physics, and Chemistry. There are 45 questions in each of the sections on Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, and 90 questions in the Biology portion. A student receives +4 marks for a right answer and 1 mark is deducted for a wrong answer.

On the other hand, there are 200 objective questions on the AIIMS entrance exam paper. Students must attempt to answer these questions within 3.5 hours. The exam pattern is divided into five sections including General Knowledge, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Aptitude. Each of the three sections such as Physics, Chemistry, and Biology has 60 questions, while the GK and Aptitude portions each have 10 questions. Moreover, a deduction of -1/3 is applied for each incorrect response.

In India, both government and private colleges provide undergraduate medical and dental programs that require passing the NEET test. It acts as a standard entry exam for medical programs such as BDS, MBBS, and others. On the other side, admission to the MBBS program at AIIMS institutes is expressly determined by the results of the AIIMS entrance examination.
