On 29th April, the Union Government of India announced that there will be a relaxation on the seat reservation for the (Other Backward Classes) OBC and EWS (Economically Weaker Section) quota. This news spread with a cluster of happiness and hope among candidates belonging to the quota. The decision was on halt for years and finally, the bill was passed with a majority. The News of relaxation in the reservation was aired by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in its latest update on NEET-UG 2021. This relaxation is going to benefit nearly 1500 OBC and 550 EWS candidates appearing for the NEET examination.

The reservation announces to provide 27% reservation for the OBC quota candidates and 10% extended reservation to EWS candidates. This scheme applies to all India Medical Institutes. This reservation extension will apply to undergraduate and postgraduate candidates applying for medical and dental courses. From the academic year beginning from the year 2021-22, this new act will be followed.

The long-pending and unmoving issue was a major concern of the Indian ministers for a while and finally, in July this year 2021, the Prime minister of India decided to give it a green flag. This historic announcement brought a wave of happiness and blessing from the candidates and their families. Estimations showcase that this decision will help more than 1500 students to pursue their MBBS course while 2500 students can do their PG without any delay.

Let us Scroll up the history:

All Indian Quota sections in the Indian selection and recruitment system had no reservation until the year 2007. Primarily, AIQ was established in 1986, and it gave students a merit-based admission opportunity. Reservation in the AIQ, to the most extent, was added in the year 2007 with providing 15% reserved seats to scheduled castes and 7.5% to the scheduled tribes. This reservation was applicable in the chosen number of educational institutes including Safdarjung Hospital, Lady Hardinge Medical College, Banaras Hindu University, Aligarh Muslim University.

While announcing the reservation quota to the candidates, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said, “The landmark decision is in sync with the reforms carried out in the field of medical education since 2014. Without reducing the number of seats available for the unreserved category, this step will benefit more than 5500 students from the backward & economically weaker sections.”

In the depths,

Though the union government announced reservation extension in the OBC and EWS, it was only applicable to the AIQ not in the state institutions. But Madras High Court took a matter of concern over the pending action of the government. And finally, after a lot of discussions, the government decided to say yes to the new reservation extension.

When the first reservation in education was introduced in 2007, it was only subjected to SC and ST but eventually, the demand for reserved seats for OBC increased. Tamil Nadu DMK party announced that except for 10,000 seats reserved for the ST and SC, all of the leftover seats will be given to the general category students. Every state has different plans and reservation quotas of seats in their state campuses and nothing could be done with them. Therefore, this new bill has brought gifts to the aspirants and given them a chance to get admission in the national and state medical colleges.
